If you are reading this article, then you might be aware of User Interface (UI) Design. It is the designing of user interfaces for machines so that they can be interactive and easy-to-use for the users. User Interface (UI) Design priorities on predicting what actions does the user need and assuring that the interface has components that are easily accessible, understandable, and can be used to facilitate the required actions. It amalgamates the logistics of visual design, interactive design, and information architecture.

UI can be based on graphs, text, audio, and video depending upon the combination of hardware and software. Any software or website can become popular based on the following facts:

  • Interactive
  • Easy-to-use
  • Easy to understand
  • Short time responding
  • Compatible on all interfacing screens

UI is mainly categorized into two:

  • Command Line Interface
  • Graphical User Interface

What practices are used while designing an interface?

Always know about the audience you are dealing with as it will surely provide you an understanding of their aim, prowess, orientation, and precedence. If you know about the user, while designing the interface, keep the following in mind:

  • Page layout: While creating the interface, make sure to add the required space between the related elements and design the structure of the page depending upon the importance of each element. Placing the elements properly on the page will result in drawing the attention of the user to the important parts of information, adding visual aids, and enhancing the readability.
  • Use of defaults: Always add some default values to make the user understand the element. Pre-defined values create a better understanding and offer to fill out the fields easily.
  • Communication: Try to use several UI elements to convey the status to the user like location, error, change in stages, and so on. It is essential to let the user know about his/her actions like the actions being performed, the actions that were needed to be taken, or the actions that need to be taken to accomplish the task.
  • Simple interface: Create the interface in such a way that all the backend complexity is hidden and only the parts necessary are visible to the user. While adding messages and labels, use simple language to increase the readability and understandability.
  • Color and texture: Add color, contrast, or texture to the text for drawing the attention of the user toward a particular element. Visual aids will definitely help you enhance the interactivity.
  • Clarity and hierarchy: To add clarity and hierarchy to the interface, make sure to use different font style, font color, text alignment, or any of the word processing elements. The elements like font size, color, style, and alignment offer a much more neat, clean, and clear user interface.
  • Consistency and ordinary UI components: While creating an interface, use common UI elements to increase the level of comfort and awareness to the users. Adding consistency and ordinary components facilitate the user to know the usage of the platform and make it easy to work with.

What are the common UI elements?

While designing the interface, maintain consistency and predictability in choosing the interface elements. Whether the user is aware of the elements or not, they will become familiar while continuously using it in a particular way. Therefore, select the elements that are easy to adapt and help users to complete the task with efficiency and triumph. There are the following categories of interface elements:

  • Containers: This category has an accordion element. An accordion is a list of stacked items arranged in a vertical manner that employs show/hide functionality. Only one item can be expanded at a time to show its content.
  • Input Controls: It includes options like radio buttons, checkboxes, dropdown lists, text fields, toggles, buttons, and date fields.
  • Navigational Components: This consists of the elements like slider, pagination, search field, breadcrumbs, icons, and tags.
  • Informational Components: It has components like a progress bar, message boxes, notifications, tooltips, and modal windows.

To make your websites and applications famous and win in today’s technological competition, be sure that they are simple, instinctive, and fun. User interface design refers to the optical layout of the UI elements so that a user can interact with a website or technological product.
